🚛 JOB OPPORTUNITY | CITY OF EKURHULENI (PERMANENT POST)
Position: Driver Operator: Turf Grass, Stadia & Hard Courts
Reference: SRAC20896
Department: Community Services Department
If you have driving experience, enjoy working in a team, and you’re passionate about supporting community facilities like sports grounds, stadia, turf areas and hard courts, then this permanent opportunity in the City of Ekurhuleni could be a strong match for you. The municipality is inviting suitable candidates to apply for the position of Driver Operator within the division that supports Turf Grass, Stadia & Hard Courts. This role is essential for ensuring that staff, tools, and equipment reach various sites safely and on time, while also helping to maintain vehicles and equipment in good working condition.
✅ What the City is looking for (Minimum Requirements)
To be considered, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Grade 11 (minimum school qualification)
- Computer literacy (basic ability to use a computer for admin/logs)
- Valid Code C1 driver’s licence with PrDP (Professional Driving Permit)
- At least 2 years relevant experience
- A responsible and safety-conscious attitude
Even though Grade 11 is listed as the minimum, applicants should still ensure they have all supporting documents ready, because the municipality may request verification related to qualifications and NQF levels. Having additional experience in municipal operations, parks and recreation, sports facilities maintenance, or operating/transporting equipment may be an advantage.
🧰 Key duties and responsibilities
The Driver Operator position is not only about driving. It includes transport, safety, supervision support, and basic operational administration. If appointed, your main responsibilities will include:
🚚 Transporting staff and equipment
You will be responsible for the safe transportation of municipal staff, tools, machinery, and equipment to different work sites. This can include sport fields, stadia, turf grass areas, and hard courts that require routine maintenance or preparation for events. Reliability and punctuality are very important, because the work teams depend on transport to meet daily schedules.
🔧 Vehicle maintenance and care
You will help ensure municipal vehicles are properly maintained. This includes checking that vehicles are roadworthy, reporting faults, and ensuring regular inspections are done. The municipality expects drivers to treat vehicles as important assets, keeping them clean, safe, and in good operating condition.
📝 Maintaining log sheets
Another key responsibility is keeping accurate vehicle log sheets. This means recording trips, mileage, fuel usage where applicable, destinations, and any incidents or maintenance concerns. Good record keeping supports accountability and helps the department manage fleet operations properly.
🦺 Safety regulations and compliance
You must adhere to safety regulations at all times. This includes safe driving practices, following municipal rules, and ensuring that staff and equipment are transported safely. Safety is a priority in municipal work environments, especially where machinery and maintenance equipment are involved.
👥 Staff supervision and people management support
The post also involves staff supervision and people management. This means you may guide or oversee certain tasks on-site, assist in coordinating staff movement, and support operational planning. Having the ability to communicate clearly, work well with others, and handle responsibilities professionally will help you succeed.
🛠 Minor repairs to equipment
You may be expected to do minor repairs to equipment. This does not mean you must be a qualified mechanic, but you should be able to assist with basic maintenance and small repairs where required, especially for tools and equipment used at sports facilities and grounds.
📌 Basic admin duties and customer service
You will also perform basic administration duties and maintain a strong customer service orientation. Municipal services often interact with the public, sports groups, and facility users, so professionalism and helpful communication are important.
🌟 Why this job matters
This role supports public facilities that are used daily by communities for sport, recreation, and events. By ensuring smooth transport operations, safe vehicle usage, and support with equipment handling, the Driver Operator contributes directly to well-maintained community spaces and improved municipal service delivery.
