🔧 About the Apprenticeship / Learnership Programme
The SAA Technical Apprenticeship / Learnership Programme is a structured training initiative that combines both theoretical classroom instruction and practical on-the-job training. Successful candidates will receive training in one of SAAT’s approved aviation trades, under the guidance of experienced aviation professionals.
The programme aims to equip learners with the technical knowledge, practical skills, discipline, and safety mindset required to work in aircraft maintenance and related technical fields. Upon completion, learners will be well-positioned to pursue employment opportunities within the aviation sector, both locally and internationally.
A total of 45 apprenticeship positions are available for the 2026 intake.
🛠️ Trades Offered
Applicants may select two trades in order of preference from the following aviation-related fields:
✈️ Aircraft Welding
This trade focuses on welding and repairing aircraft and engine components. Learners will gain exposure to plasma spraying, heat treatment processes, and the manufacturing of aircraft parts and tooling. Precision, accuracy, and safety are critical elements of this trade.
🎨 Aircraft Spray Painting
This trade involves corrosion prevention, repairing paint coatings, applying protective coatings, and painting aircraft interiors and exteriors. Learners will be trained to work with specialised aviation materials while maintaining strict quality and safety standards.
🪑 Aircraft Trimming
Aircraft Trimming focuses on the manufacturing, repairing, inspection, and maintenance of aircraft interiors and survival equipment. This trade plays an essential role in passenger comfort, safety, and compliance with aviation regulations.
🧩 Aircraft Composite Structures
This trade involves the manufacturing, repairing, inspection, and maintenance of aircraft composite components. With modern aircraft increasingly using composite materials, this field offers strong future career prospects in aviation technology.
🎓 Minimum Educational Requirements
Applicants must meet one of the following educational criteria:
Option 1: Grade 12 (Matric)
- Minimum 50% or Level 4 in Pure Mathematics
- Minimum 50% or Level 4 in Physical Science
- English (symbol required)
OR
Option 2: N3 Certificate
- Minimum 50% pass in Mathematics
- Minimum 50% pass in Engineering Science
